Tiny Decking

by rkipling » Tue Mar 10, 2009 3:29 pm

Hello all,

I was hoping for a bit of advice on my first major bit of DIY - building some decking over my existing paved patio round the back of my house.

The patio is full width of the house (4.7m) and sticks out 2.5m.

I was going to sit the joists directly onto the patio with 150mm joists.

As there is a drain at the wall and the opposite side runs on to my lower level lawn, should I be concerned about the joists being sat on a damp patio, considering I've never seen puddling on there?

My other option is sitting smaller joists on top of some old 40mm edging stones, but i need at least 120mm under the boards to clear a concrete step at the back door.

Am I overthinking this small area of decking?

rkipling,
Suggest you use 125mm treated joists, they will last years even if in contact with a patio which occasionally gets wet.
