My door has a rim deadlock - which is at least 10 years old but works fine. How can I tell if it meets current requirements for my insurance policy - which states BS3621?

Also I have some sash windows which are locked with the old style brass thumbscrew - circa 1900. I assume these don't come up to standard as they don't have removable keys. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a replacement screw with a removable key without having to put in additional locks?

The latest BS3621 (2005) calls for a bolt throw of 20mm rather than the 14mm of the previous version. That is the main difference between the two.

How do you find out? First measure the bolt throw. Second take the lock out and if it conforms to whichever version of BS 3621 it should be stamped ontto te lock somewhere.

Your rim Deadlock will definately not meet BS Standard ALL locks that have a british standard will be stamped with the BS reference on it and the BS kite mark. If it hasn't got that then it is not.
All external doors should have BS loack on them and all downstairs windows should have locks on them as should all upstairs windows "accessible via a flatroof"
