I have been trying to repoint sections of my patio for a couple of weeks now with disastrous results. I bought some ready mixed dry mortar and thought that that would be ok - it dried almost white and has been a nightmare to remove. So I went to the builders merchants and bought a bag of cement and some sand. I have made 3 samples of mortar ; 1:3, 1:4 and 1:5. They have each dried a greyish colour and I need to make a buff coloured mortar.

It must be the easiest thing in the world to do, can someone help please?

Its all to do with the colour of the cement and the colour of the sand and the proportions thereof. If you are really particular about the colour the use white cement and color it with a cement dye added to the aggregate.
