Hi

I am looking to buy compression fittings that will attach to a lead pipe but am a bit foxed by the sizes. For lead, pipe size is given by the weight of one foot length of the pipe. However, because the pipe is connected I cannot just hack a bit off and weigh it! Does anyone know the approximate external diameter of 5lb, 6lb, 7lb and 9lb lead?

I realise this query goes a bit further back than imperial/metric but here's hoping.

Obviouly you need a leadloc but you know that. There is an ancient formula as follows:

Measure the interior diameter of the pipe. Add to it the thickness of the lead. Multiply the result by 0.483 for 1/32" thickness, 0.967 for 1/16", 1.45 for 3/32" and 1.933 for 1/8". That will give you your weight per foot.

Hi Ed,

Measure the outside diameter of the lead and preferably the internal diameter - go to plumbers merchant and ask for a 'leadlock' to suit.
