Single skin blockwork

by geordieboy » Wed Jun 24, 2009 12:00 am

Evening all,
Is it possible to construct an out building 6.5m2 with 3.9m high gable ends in a single skin of blockwork? There will be an opening of 4m x 2.1m on one of the gable ends and another on one of the other non gable walls. The height of the non gable walls is 2.2m. The roof is to be slated and supported by steel purlins. Will it require piers on the walls without openings and will the openings need piers to support the steels over them?
The plan was to make an internal leaf from studwork. Would I be better off with cavity walls?
Regards,
Chris.

geordieboy,
Difficult to give a definitive answer without seeing plans but:-
Will it require piers on the walls without openings - yes
will the openings need piers to support the steels over them - yes
I assume you will be using solid concrete blocks.
end
