Load Rating on a Loft

by neilod » Wed Jun 03, 2009 5:01 pm

I have a 17'x12' loft with 16" spaced metal beams rated at 50ksi. There is also a 50ksi meetal beam down the middle(6' on each side).

Is there a formula to figure out the load rating of this loft? No luck on google.

hi

interesting one... i think that 50ksi is 344.7N/mm2, which I presume is a reference to the strength of the metal joists; probably not the allowable or safe working load of the floor...

Without the known floor configuration, how it's supported at the ends, and of course accurate details of the joist section properties, I don't believe it possible to answer your question....

If you do really want to know the safe working load of the loft floor/deck, you may be better approaching a local Chartered Structural Engineer to look into this in detail for you.

best regards

andrew
