Internal damp

by Stuart Pillski » Tue Aug 04, 2009 9:07 pm

Hi, we have just noticed since the recent bout of wet weather we have a 2 foot high damp patch on an internal wall near where an old chimney used to be. The cottage is approx 500 years old but had an extension added in the 1960's when the chimney was blocked off.

The damp is inside the old build no where near any exterior wall, all we can think is this maybe coming from the chimney or the ground - just don't see how or why this would suddenly appear.

Any ideas please?

How was the chimney blocked off? If it was capped it is possible the cap has failed and water is now getting in from the roof.
