Wiring a gas hob and electric oven

by damian » Fri Jun 08, 2007 11:12 am

Hi.
I am replacing my old cooker with a gas hob and electric oven.
The old cooker was wired to a terminal box, which is wired using 6mm T&E to a cooker switch, which is wired using 6mm T&E to a 45amp MCB on the consumer unit.
My new hob comes with a 13amp plug attached (presumably for the electric ignition?) as does the electric oven.
Can I just cut the plug off both the appliances and wire it directly in to the terminal box downstream of the cooker switch or would this be bad as the appliances need protecting with 13amp fuses?
If I can't do that, can I just replace the terminal box downstream of the cooker switch with a standard 2 gang wall socket and just plug both devices in?

Thank you for all your help/thoughts!

Regards,
Damian

As for chopping the plugs off and wiring them in, I shouldn't imagine that this is a problem, because it is protected by the MCB, but I can't be sure, so I wouldn't do that just yet, until someone knows whether you can, but I know for sure that the cooked switch and spare socket is there so that people know where to turn the cooker off, so you shouldn't remove that.

Hi Damian,
I would do your 2nd idea for the reason you say, ie fused protection for both. Hob will prob. need 13A fuse but oven may need smaller, poss. 10A

I feel that it is best to still use the cooker switch and cut the plugs off, but if you do this, you will need to put a fused spur in between the juction box going to the cooker switch and the actual appliences, this then protects the flex on the hob and the flex on the cooker.
