cellar access

by markwilliams82 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:36 pm

hey everyone, i'm currently living in a 1860s terrace house which has a cellar and access point at the front where people used to deliver coal.

we're looking to build a porch on the front of the house and unfortunately the cellar access is close to where we want the porch and will need foundations...what could we do with the cellar access to allow us to build a porch?

When your home was built, they would have made sure the concrete slab was amply strong enough for the job.
Check out the condition and position off the existing cellar walls and slab and if OK condition.
Design your new porch and work out how much it will weigh, a modern porch will not weigh very much and its base will cover a much greater area than the shoot, and will spread the load over the existing cellar walls and ground in all probability.
If in doubt consult the local council, you may require their permission.
