Two Fireplaces one chimney-close up the bottom

by stxlinda » Tue Nov 10, 2009 1:16 am

I have two fireplaces (one in the basement and one upstairs on the main level) that both use the same chimney. I want to brick up the bottom level fireplace but still be able to utilize the top fireplace. Is there something special that needs to be done with regards to heat etc etc so that what is closed up does not catch on fire or there isn't some other unknown problem? Thanks

Yes you can close up the basement fireplace it will not make any problems as regards to the first floor fireplace they are both vented into the main stack but the basement is vented in higer up then the first floor fireplace, just one problem tell santa not to use the basement branch.
