My daughter has had a building survey done on a property she is interested in purchasing. Although the survey has highlighted a number of things including the presence of asbestos in ceilings and garage roof there are a number of things that could not be inspected due to floor coverings, cupboards in place, etc. Are these normal exclusions for a full building survey, and should she be concerned about asbestos?

These surveys are a waste of money and time.
They tend to recommend employing a specialist for every aspect of a home and you can spend a fortune and learn nothing useful.
Its the sort of thing you can do yourself.
Surveyors do not access the roof, pull up floors or look at any of the things that might prove useful. They merely look at the same things you can see anyway.
There were tens of thousands of garages built using white asbestos.
Left alone it is harmless. Dismantled carefully its harmless.
I would be interested to learn how he worked out that there is asbestos in the ceilings.
Perhaps they have artex decoration?
Earlier versions of this were made with asbestos.
Again leave it alone and its harmless.
Do not attempt to sand it off or work on it with power tools.
Do read the Health and Safety information regarding asbestos.
There is asbestos in the air that we breath, it does no harm.
Only people exposed to asbestos on a daily regular basis are at risk and that risk is low as long as the rules are followed.

These surveys are a waste of money and time. If you want to purchase some house by building surveys you can do it .Don't worry you must reach your aim.Thanks a lot sharing this good information.

if u watch the property shows on tv they always advise to get a full survey and it annoys me.

frankly they are pointless in my experience. on our property the loft was so full of junk they could not get access, so didn't bother to inspect. did i get a discount? no - because they did at least try to get into the loft. only because i'm in the trade myself that i knew things were ok with the place in general.

they may turn up things such as possible future development plans in the area which could have an effect on your property value in years to come but you can search this stuff for yourself easily enough.

waste of time and money, stick to the basic survey. people put to much faith in them.
