hello there , i want to lay solid oak on my front room floor but have conflicting views on how to do it . The floor is solid old yorkshire stone which has been asphalted (before me a long time ago), secret nailing is out of the question i've been told and so the options are the underlay making it a floating floor or , the flexible adhesive straight onto the asphalt - what do you recommend ? Thanks .

We prefer the floating floor. Timber of any kind moves. It expands and contracts at sometimes quite an alarming rate. Given its own flexibility it will settle in to the humidity conditions of the room without splitting cracking or warping as a result of being fastened in any way.
