hi we are moving house soon and are unable to have the keys to do anything in the house. It has stood vacant for a very long time and i was wandering what effect this will have on the boiler and heating system. On the day we move we have booked an engineeire to service it would be greatfull for any advice as we will need the heating on over the holidays

It depends on the type of system, surely whoever owns the property now will have the heating on even if just for a few hours per day - to try to prevent pipes freezing ?

With alot of modern boilers, the pump will run once every 24 hours, the prevent the pump sticking.

If the heating does work, and if it has not been drained down.
Your new home will be very cold indeed and will take several days for the walls, ceilings and floors to warm, before the rooms become comfortable.
Keep in mind that you will have all the doors open while moving in and if you do turn the heating on at this time the heat will disappear straight out the door.
You would probably do best to finish moving in and then leave for a hotel or a friends home while your new home warms.
