I've been putting noggins in the ceilings for my barn conversion and it's a PAIN! I have three rooms and a hall in one area which have a lower floor level than the rest of the house - the ceilings are at the same level and I thought that putting a frame of timber underneath the joists to support the plasterboard would be simpler. That is, run lengths of timber at 600mm centres at 90 degrees to the joists rather than noggins, then fill in the gaps under the joists. The ceiling could do with being a bit lower anyway. The thing is, what size of timber to use? Rough-sawn 45mmx45mm isn't usually that accurately sawn from my suppliers so I was planning on using 'regularised' timber.. Would 38x50 be substantial enough? Thanks for any replies.. Ed. :)
