"Fishy" smelling bulb holder

by tr002b0685 » Fri Jan 08, 2010 6:55 pm

Hi,

When my hallway light is swithched on, after about 10 minutes there is a very strong smell comes from it.

The only way to describe it is slightly fishy smelling, seems to be when the bulb holder gets hot.

Once the light is swithched off it goes away!

Any advice on what is the cause and any action I should take to rectify it.

Thanks

One would expect to find a lose connection. With that in mind only look when completely isolated. i.e. At consumer unit not just light switch.
Also since wires may pop out when you try to inspect look on project pages first so you have best chance not to get wires mixed up.
If you have not worked on lights before be aware you may have 8 live wires. Three neutral and five line plus earths. It does need checking but if your not sure what you are doing I would book an electrician and use an energy saving bulb until it is checked to reduce power used.

I would say the most posts asking for help are from people who have tried to change a light and got wires mixed up. So do read projects first.
