lights went out in three downstairs rooms, garage, workshop and utility room, but did not trip out fuse in consumer unit. have checked all lighting connections in these rooms but all seems ok. any ideas ?[/b]

Possibility the light before the three that failed. The lights are daisy chained so a bad connection in the ceiling rose in room A can cause lights to fail in room B.

Although hidden junction boxes using screw fittings are not permitted never the less they are used and vibration can cause screws to become lose. Often floor boards are marked but carpet hides it. Although CAT testers may trace fault normally it's just hard work and a bit of detective work needed to find that type of fault.

Hi,
from the location of the failed lights I would wonder if they are in fact not on original circuit.
If it's an extension/conversion of the property it is possible they are fed from a local power circuit via a Fused Connection Unit (fused spur) tucked away somewhere, it may be in full view but not apparent what it is/does,
