Fixing television to partition (stud) wall General problems, solutions, information and advice on fixing to walls of all kinds

I would like to attach a fairly heavy 40 inch flat screen television to a partition wall. The wall is of the stud type. I have looked at various web sites, and the general advice is to fix the screws for the television bracket into the studs in the wall in order to obtain the necessary strength. My problem is that the studs in the wall are too far apart for the size of the television. Is there any alternative method that would allow me to fix the television to the partition wall?

You could screw a sheet of plywood to the wall attaching the plywood to the studs and then the TV to the plywood. Or you could remove some of the plaster board and attach a supporting frame to the joists behind it. Then cover with plaster board before screwing the TV mount to the frame.

The first solution is simpler but the second solution looks nicer and keeps the TV closer to the wall.

If you get 3 good fixings down the vertical centre of the wall bracket into the upright stud, you should be able to use something like toggle bolts for some extra support in other plaster board. But make sure you are fixing the 3 main central ones in the centre of the upright stud. I would look at something like 2" no:10's or three 2" wood raw bolts All with large washers.
