Drilled through plaster and hitting 'rubbery/bouncy' matter? General problems, solutions, information and advice on fixing to walls of all kinds

Hi!

I have just moved into an old georgian house, around 200 years old, and iwas going to hang a heavy duty mirror. When i drilled through the old plaster, I hit some air then quickly hit a very 'rubbery' material that bounced the drill bit back a bit.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I was drilling into a wall that was alongside a window and would have later been brick (at a much deeper point).

Im unsure if i should force it on or relocate the hole. Does anyone have any ideas?

sounds like you've hit lath - the old wooden strips they used to use to 'hang' the plaster onto. though you'd normally expect this on interior walls.

any reason why you can't chip away a little bit of plaster and expose what's underneath? you may want to know, if you've found it in one spot you may also find it throughout the property.

you can always refill the hole afterwards - or hide it with a mirror :)
