Attaching plasma TV/floating wall to plasterboard outerwall

by simon_williams » Sun Feb 14, 2010 3:19 pm

I am attempting to build a floating wall to mount my TV as a way of reducing the load on the existing plasterboard outer wall. Although a lot of the load will be trasnmitted to the floor, there will still be a considerable moment acting trying to pull the frame away from the wall.
I believe my house has joists running adjacent to the ceiling and was considering using this as the fixing as it would also give the highest mechanical advantage. Does anyone have any recommendations as to whether this is a sensible idea or not?

Another alternative is to use the existing studs - how much load could I expect these to take?

I have included a sketch below, showing a sideview section. Hope this makes sense.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Regards
Simon

simon_williams,
Cut holes (either round or square) in the dry lining plasterboards where the fixings are to be. Fit timber pads in the holes and drill through these into the blockwork wall - you will then have a very secure fixing.

Thanks for the advice stoneyboy.

Does anyone have any experience with DryLinePro or Rigifix plugs?

They sound like a good solution based on this review

Google "drylinepro.com/acatalog/this_is_a_brochure_page.html"
