dot and dab failures

by Martyn M » Sat Mar 13, 2010 10:43 am

I've just dot and dabbed some new plasterboards to my previously painted plastered walls and despite sand papering the walls first, the dabs have failed to stick to the wall in a number of places. I was advised NOT to use PVA. My two questions are: why did the dabs fail and is it OK to secure the failed dabs by drilling and plugging through the dabs and into the original brick wall, then inserting 3" screws? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks Martyn M

Martyn M,
"why did the dabs fail" depends what adhesive you used.
"is it OK to secure the failed dabs by drilling and plugging through the dabs and into the original brick wall" YES but check for buried pipes and cables.

Thanks Stoneyboy, I used Lafarge's Universal Bonding Compound. Does that give you any clues?

Martyn M,
"I used Lafarge's Universal Bonding Compound" that should have been fine - was it fresh? There's usually a "use before date" on the bag.
