Help needed!! Replacing hall and landing double light switch

by ashleypw » Mon Jun 18, 2007 3:33 pm

Hi

problem replacing double light switch,
i have a hall and landing light and they are operated by a double switch upstairs and 2 singles downstairs, both being able to control either upstairs or down.

i want to change the switch for a new one which i brought, the one i purchased was a 16 amp 2 way switch, firstly is this the right one????

Now on to the problem!!

Currently the wiring is as follows.

Left to Right top row
L1 = Blue, L2 = Yellow, Com = Red

Left to Right bottom row
L1=Red, L2 = Blue + (Black feed), Com = Yellow + (Red Feed)

New light switch config is

Left to Right top row.
1Way, Com, Com, 1Way

Left to Right Bottom,
2Way, 2Way

how do i wire it in?
i have tried many different ways and it just doesn't work,
i have copied the old one and it just won't work, am i missing something??

aaaaahhhhhhhhhh

thanks in advance for you help :shock:

Hi not sure of your new sw. never seen a 16A 2way light sw. b4!
Any way key is comms., treat each sw1/2 seperately;
forget top & bottom rows and look at each sw in turn, both will have a comm. plus L1 & L2.
Your second sw. is definately wired wrongly! L1 & L2 will have 2 wires in each , the common will only have 1 wire, normal practice would be ;
red + red (one from twin +1 from 3 core) in say L1
Blue + black (one from each2,3 core) in L2, yellow in com. other end of sw. opposite L1,L2.
You can confirm which is com by looking @ other switch operating same light, ie whatever colour is in com. @ other end must be same in your sw.,if not yellow(ie red then swap red/yel at first sw to match.
Likewise for other sw.in dble sw. check colour in com. of its opposite sw. & make it the same in your dbl. the other 2 colours go in L1 & L2, either way round.
hope you're now less confused than me!!!
