Insulating solid walls

by nick the brick » Wed Apr 14, 2010 1:15 pm

Freinds of mine recently had an extension built with a solid wall construction of 100mm brick skin backed up with 100mm thermalite block. How do they best insulate to please building control and how do they prevent damp penetrating through the wall?
P.S The architect is permanently unavailable :(

nick the brick,
"How do they best insulate to please building control" doubtful you will be able to do so.
"how do they prevent damp penetrating through the wall" you cannot.
end

You have two choices.
One insulate on the inside (favorite)
Two insulate on the outside.
From the point of keeping expensive heat inside the home, then insulating on the inside is best.

You can insulate on the outside and in so doing create a windproof, waterproof, insulated skin. This means however, that before you get the real benefit of the insulation, you have to warm up the entire wall. This works where you are always there, and the heating is always on.
Where you turn the heating off and on again, then the insulation is best on the inside as the place warms more quickly.

The balance is, fitting the outside insulation round windows and doors.
Loosing a small amount of space in the room.
