New External Chimney Help All manner of questions and solutions to problems and issues surrounding the subject of brickwork, blockwork and stonework

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on adding an external fireplace and chimney to a new build home. I have search the web but cant seem to find anything. I am in the process of getting planning etc so should hopefully have it soon.

What is the best system to use, I was looking at the Pumice Chimney but realy dont have a clue. Can I get a normal brickie to do the build or is this a specialised thing.

Any advice on the build / materials etc would be very much appreciated.

Hi i built a chimney on the outside of my new house a few years ago and the first thing i did was to chop out a couple of course of bricks and go into the cavity i then shuttered up a 6 inch deep square box and about 2ft square and i blocked off a bit of the cavity downwards and to the sides i then poured concrete in with reinforcing rods in,
After that had gone off i used 9inch round pot chimney liners and then built the outer skin in the same bricks i filled in the gaps and progressed upwards toothing the bricks into the main wall i even had to cut wall tiles to pass it through to the foof hight all went well and it worked a treat i used it for my oil boiler so in answert to your question no it doesnt need anyone special to build one i am a plumber and gas engineer and i did it ok best of luck

Hi there,

Thats me got all planning permission etc now so am ready to go. Unfortunitly I am no further forward with how I am going to do this. I cant even find any local builders with the knowledge of fireplaces and chimneys. The web is also not to informative.
If anyone who has done a similar job then I would appreciate it if you can help me. I need help with how to go about doing it and also what material to use. I have bought a Firebelly FB1 multifuel Stove so the firplace and chimney would have to be suitable for that. I live in a new build house (timber frame) and the hight from ground level to top of Chimney would be approx 7m.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
