Most timber fireplaces are held to the wall by little angle brackets which are screwed to the back of the timber and buried in the plaster. Its almost impssible to do this without some damage so usually its best to get a bolster chisel behind the mantle piece, directly above one of the pillars, and lever outward. This will allow you so see where the brackets are fixed.
