Pipe Identification

by Old Bodger » Wed Jul 21, 2010 7:10 pm

I have found 2 pipes buried in the plaster to the left side of our dining room chimney breast and I'm not sure what they are. The house is Edwardian.

One pipe is capped at about 5 feet above floor level and runs up through the chimney breast beyond ceiling level. This one is quite rusty and is just over half an inch in diameter.

The other runs from floor to ceiling, to the left of the above pipe and is black and has little rust and is exavtly half an inch in diameter.

Can anyone tell me what these are and is there any easy way to tell if they are still in use as I'd like to remove them before re-plastering.

Any help much appreciated

The capped off pipe could be an old gas supply. It may still be live, but simply from a description it is impossible to tell.

The smaller black pipe could be an old power conduit which may or may not still be in use.

Not much help I am afraid, because relying on a description only means any answer can only be sheer guesswork.

If you want to remove them, get a RGI to examine them.

Could be anything - the capped one could be gas.

And the other sounds like electrical sheathing.

Thanks for the advice.

Now I know what I'm dealing with I'll contact the relevant people to do the work before the plastering starts.

The electrical conduit pipe can probably stay where it is but the old gas pipe is so rusty I think it has to go.

Thanks again
