Gap between where the floor tiles meet the wall tiles

by bezzas7 » Mon Jul 19, 2010 2:33 pm

Hi all,

There is a gap of say 5mm to 8mm give or take high between where the floor tiles meet the wall tiles in the bathroom.
The gap goes 3.5cm to 4cm back to the breeze block.

i'm guessing its the thickness of the dot and dab then plaster board, then tile adhesive then tile.

Problem is if i put some grout coloured silicon sealant down along the gap its just going to push into the gap.

So should i -

1 - Fill the gap with filler flush to the front with either pollyfiller or the large gap pollyfiller?

2 - Fill with tile grouting flush to the front?

3 - expanding foam?

4 - Fill with loads of silicone sealant?

And then use the grout coloured silicone sealant to finish off the job.

Not sure whats best?

Your help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

I would fill it with grout first then afterwards seal it with a thin bead of silicon.

But won't the grout crack with general expanding\shrinkage? the floor tiles are laid on a chip board floor so there could be some movement there.

would filler be a good idea then finish with a bead of silicone?

My bathroom is tiled right to the floor and I grouted it with normal grout but added an admixture to it to make it flexible and then silicon after it had dried, if the floor is tiled then you should be using flexible grout on that too so you may have some admixture left, its not dear anyway for a small tub.

You could fill it with some kind of flexible filler and then silicon after, either way would be ok

But won't the grouting crack and come loose in the gap?

I am worried that i will fill the gap up with grouting and it will crack or come loose in the gap and cause the silicone to split?

Just depends how much movement there is on the floor, mix the grout with an additive which makes it flexible and it will be ok, then silicon it the next day.
