With bayonet type lamps the neutral and line wires can be swapped without problem both are considered as live.
With screw lamps the screw has to be connected to neutral and centre to line.
Some lamps are extra low voltage and again we consider both line and neutral as live wires and although maybe marked line and neutral it does not really matter.
Because in this country we fuse the line wire in the plug we use not reversible plugs and we are taught to be careful to connect line and neutral correct way around but in many other countries the old style fuse box is used with rows and rows of fuses one for each socket and they do not worry about line and neutral and can reverse the direction of the plug. So are in general a lot less worried about polarity than we are.
