Loft floor strengthening.

by happyhacker » Mon Oct 11, 2010 11:04 am

I have a large loft but the "joists in the loft are few and far between. It looks as if it is designed only to support the ceilings. The span from external walls would appear to be about 6m. What size joists would I need to allow for general storage in this area?

I am also looking for a good loft ladder, not a cheapy but something that is easy to unfold but not the expense of electrical. Anyone have any suggestions?

There's no reason what is there at present is adequate to take storage as that is what is taken into account when the ceiling joists (trusses) were designed. If you were looking at having a room up there, then that's a complete different story, but for general maintenance/storage, then what's there will be fine.

As for loft ladders...

Google "lmgtfy.com/?q=loft+ladders"

There are many different types. This one is quite common...

The "joists" are few and far between and not sufficient for laying floor boarding so I need proper joists.

Thanks I will follow up the ladders.
