I have madly decided to oil my wooden kitchen tops.I was advised that they were beech and I could just sand and apply had to use my electric sander using coarse paper. It looks ok but it's patchy and where I haven't sanded the oil doesn't soak in. Can I use steel wool and wet sand to get a good finish? I just want to achieve an all round good finish and it was ultra Difficult to sand in the first place.

i would avoid steel wool if you can as it tends to leave particles behind that can turn black. wet and dry sand paper is great stuff for wooden worktops. use it with finishing oil by liberon, its really hard-wearing and gives a lovely finish, only needs redoing every 6 months or so, if that. have a look at:

don't use steel wool - tiny fragments will be left embedded in the wood. they will absorb moisture, rust and stain the timber.
