We've recently bought a renovation-job 1930's house with 6 original doors. I think they are oak, but not entirely sure. Our problem is that they have obviously been stripped sometime in the past and are continuously leaking sticky residue from some of the panels - no matter what we do they won't stop - and as we don't know what has been done to the doors, we don't know what it is.
We have tried scrubbing the doors down with a damp cloth and mild soap, lightly sanding, cleaning with white spirit, leaving to dry out for weeks, and most recently a matt clear varnish which has worked really well on some areas, but where the doors leak, the varnish is peeling off and the sticky residue is back.
We don't know what to try next - any suggestions?
Is it worth trying a knotting solution on some of the panels?
Please help we are moving in in 2 weeks and our baby is due in 5!!
