Need to trim a Lintel All manner of questions and solutions to problems and issues surrounding the subject of brickwork, blockwork and stonework

Morning Guys

We are in the middle of getting a new gas fire installed, having removed the old one, the gap left is slightly under sized for the 'new fire'.

Now as far as I know there is a lintel above the gap, there is a 4" square block that runs the length of the gap, so my question is is it possible to trim the lintel back by at most 5mm

Probably easier to remove the existing lintol and fit a new one which is not so deep.

concrete lintels are made with very hard/ strong concrete with steel reinforement in. the steel requires a minimum concrete cover to provide resistant to heat. probably best not to remove this protection.

either move the lintel up (remove mortor and top and bottom and remortor with 15mm bottom course and 5mm top - ensure chimney doesnt collapse, props required?),
move the floor down,
or buy a fire which fits.
