IDEAL E-Type RS - 35N boiler turning on intermittentently

by kalifornia7 » Mon Mar 14, 2011 9:00 pm

Hi I have an IDEAL E-Type RS - 35N boiler its been running perfectly fine for the past year and a half. This morning it started to play up.

The are a couple of symtoms to this problem.

1. When the timer is on constant and on Water it fires up the bolier and everything seems to be ok but within a few minutes the boiler goes off. Then some time later it comes back on a again and a few minutes later it goes off.

2. When the timer is swichted over to Heating and water it never seems to fire up.

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi kalifornia7,

Problem 1.
The boiler switching itself on and off durring the water heating cycle is normal. The boiler has a temperature cut off setting, when this is reached the boiler will shut off despite the hot water cylinder thermostat still demanding more heat.
If this is happening too frequently you may have a problem with the water flow. If the water is not moved quickly enough around the system then the boiler water temperature will overheat.

Two ways to improve this are :-

Increase the pump speed, if your pump has this facility. Many Grundfoss pumps have three speed settings. 1 = lowest and 3 = highest.

Increase the water temperature setting on the boiler. Usually a rotatable knob with settings between 0 and 6.

Problem 2
This is a bit vaque. With the timer on and the set to water and heating, try turning the cylinder and the room thermostat (if you have one) up to max. The boiler should fire up in response to a signal from either stat.
