by Smokey » Thu Mar 15, 2007 10:25 am

Can anyone tell me the best way to paint over varnished wood paneling?
I want to apply vinel mat paint for the finnish. Should i just use suger soap and then paint over I doon't really want to do a lot of rubbing down.

It all depends what state the existing varnish is in. If its okay with no cracks or flaking then you should get away with just a light rub over with a 240grit sand paper just to give the paint a key and a wipe over with white spirit to remove the dust, other wise its a case either chemical or manual removing of the varnish.

When you do paint be sure to use an oil based under coat and an oil based vinyl matt top coat.

Thanks to u both. I didn't think that u could get oil-based vinyl matt - you learn something everyday :) :D BTW the varnish is in good condition so i might just go that route.
