Ceiling lights

by NCB » Sun Jul 08, 2007 3:36 pm

Hi, I have tried to fit new ceiling lights I am confused by the wiring. I appear to have 3 red, 4 black & 2 earth. The 3 red are not connected and the 4 black (one thick, 3 thin) were connected 1 thick black to live 3 thin black to neutrel & the 2 earth connected together?? I am confused because wiring the new light the same as the old ones they dont work they just trip the fuse in the fuse box.
I have 2 ceiling light in the same room off 1 switch.

Thanks Nig

Hi Nig.
you are mistaken!!
if u have 3 reds assuming wiring is pvc twin & earth as normal domestic wiring, then you must also have 3 blks & 3 earths so look again!!
The 3 reds may be connected to each other in spare term. but not to fitting,
3 earths together to fitting,
2 blk to Neutral of fitting; & last blk. which is sw. live back from sw. goes to Live of fitting( this core should be over sleeved with red) plus a red going on to other fitting in room., still doesn't add up! have you 'lost' a wire in ceiling, also not enough earths....is your wiring pre 1960's? as not always earthed then! have a close look at what u have, regards SPARX
