I wish to fit a surrey flange, but the new cylinder I have purchased has a 22 mm compression outlet. Can this be converted to take the surrey flnage or should I exchange the Gledhill cylider to one with a 1 inch outlet to suit the surrey flange fitting

The 22mm compression you mention is only a fitting screwed in to the 3/4" flange on the tank. This fitting can be removed and the Surrey flange fitted as a replacement. Be very careful when unscrewing as it is easy to kink the thin copper tank.

Thanks but I can see no but I can't see any sign of a flange/hex between the 22mm thread and where it enters the tank. Would I use a pair of pliers or grips to remove?

As a rule, the centre tap of a cylinder is a 3/4" bsp female thread and the 22mm compression is actually a separate 3/4" bsp male to 22mm compression coupling or elbow fitting. However, I can't see what you have so proceed with caution.

What does concern me is cylinders don't usually come with compression fittings attached as these are chosen by the installer to suit the installation. Can you post a picture?

If it is a standard fitting, grips or Stilsons will be required to remove it.

Looking at it I would say not. Additional fittings on tank outlets are usually made of brass but that is copper. I have fitted plenty of tanks and probably Gledhill ones but have not come across this problem before. Contact your supplier or Gledhill in Blackpool themselves for advice.
