solid oak floor on to chipboard??

by eddylyons » Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:41 am

ive recently replaced all my floor boards down stairs with a 18mm chipboard floor, i have now found the solid wood that i like and have mixed responses on how to fit it.....been told not to nail as chipboard is weak.....not to glue coz floor will want to move naturally....so i thought of maybe just laying the floor over a underlay and not glueing at all would prob be best method.....obviously leaving the 12mm expansion gap around the edge of the wood. is this correct or should i throw a few nails in to stop the floor from having gaps appear over time?? thanks eddy

no thats fine its called a floating floor,If you want no nail it down you need to screw-down 6mm ply to the existing chipboard.

there is an acoustic boarding you can buy, or a thin polystyrene 3mm.I think the board is 7mm but dont quote me on the thickness, you lay it on a 45 degree angle to the flooring.
