Tiling without the bath Advice and information on tiling and fixing tiles to a variety of surfaces

I am tiling my small bathroom and have two questions.

1) I am planning to tile the two walls where the bath will sit. Currently there is no bath. My plan is to tile half way up where the basin will sit, then to the ceiling around the bath area. This would be done without the bath and then install the bath at a later date by pushing it against the tiles and sealing it. Is this a wise move?

2) When removing the tiles that had been around the top of the bath, the top thin layer of plaster was removed. In fact the tiles almost pealed off. This has left a difference in level to the wall surface of approximately 1-2mm. What should my next steps be?

DIY novice towcester,
Nail a batten to the wall about 1/2 a tile above the bath rim and tile to this. Once the bath is fitted you can then fill in the strip of tiles. Don't worry about a 2mm unevenness in the wall surface - use tile adhesive to correct this.
