BATTEN LAMPHOLDER FOR CEILING

by elhiggo » Sat Jan 28, 2012 9:28 am

Hi i want to put a light in the loft. i have brought three core cable and a batten lamp holder also a 3 pin plug.
what i want to know can i wire this lamp holder up so that i can plug it into a electrical socket.
i dont want to put this light on to the main light circuit ring.
would it be safe to just plug into a electrical plug socket .i guess it would be like a lamp light with a long cable.
thanks for your help and advice in advance.
p.s as you may guess i am not a electrician but i can do basic diy jobs. i just want to be safe in what i am doing.

Hi Elhiggo

Usually when adding a loft light you would run a new, perment live supply from an existing ceiling rose or junction box (from the lighting circuit)

Run this to a 6A / 4 terminal junction box, then connect a switch and light to the junction box (wiring diagrammes can be found on this site)

Assuming that you have sockets in the loft, then what you are proposing is fine, just fit a 3A fuse in the plug. Check all connections and this should be an easy job - good luck
