Extending a dormer-style house ?

by swayzak » Tue Feb 07, 2012 7:10 pm

Hi

I'm a complete novice with respect to building / extensions.

I have a 3 bed dormer style house (with 1st floor rooms having dormer style windows, sticking out of the roof tiles).

There is room to extend at the back, and possibly to one side (by a few feet).

Is it possible / straightforward to extend these type of houses ?

If so what sort of options are there ? Presumably extending at the rear would break the "dormer" style, but I'm not clear as to how this would work ....

Advice welcome !

thanks

Its very difficult to advise you on this type of job without seeing any pictures of your property.
The best advise I can give you is to call an architect,if you proceed with the work, plans will have to be submitted for approval anyway

It's a fairly straightforward thing to do but will probably require a structural engineers input. The dormer section which sticks out will have a roof that needs to be supported at the base of the walls and where the roof joins with the main roof pitch.

Find an architect and discuss.
