Cistern Siphon Adaptor All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

I've recently had a leak from under the toilet cistern. I removed the Siphon to see if the washers needed replacing (which they appeared to do), however I noticed that the Siphon has. 1.5 inch outlet, and the cistern has a 2 inch hole. Who ever fitted it had filled this gap with silicon.

Should I purchase a Cistern Siphon Adaptor e.g. http://www.heatandplumb.com/acatalog/Ci ... aptor.html

If so, is this product from B&Q the same type of thing?

Else should I do the same as the previous person and fill the gap with silicon?

Hi Danny

No the B&Q product is not an adaptor but merely a "washer" for 2" cisterns

Your choices are,

1/ Get a 2" outlet siphon
2/ Use the adaptor

Using silicone to "fill the gap" = bodge (IMHO)

BTW as with all close coupled cisterns, go easy on the clamping wing nuts, just tight enough to stop the thing leaking but not too tight so that it crushes the donut and causes it to leak!!

I don't think It's close coupled cistern, i.e. it's a separate unit from the toilet pan and mounted on the wall.

I think I'll grab one of those adapters and refit the siphon.

Hold one there danny

If its a low level cistern (flush pipe connects from cistern to pan) then you have a whole dfferent ball game

The cistern you have has a pull or lever handle doesn't it?

It will not have a push button type of flush, in that case the sealing mechanism from the cistern to the flush pipe will be via a compression type fitting, I have absolutely no idea how silicoon was holding in the water, you must have had some type of cobbled together washer nut arrangement

Yes it is a lever, rather than a push button,

I put it all back together yesterday so we could use the toilet for a bit, haven't got a bucket to chuck water down with, so i can't get a photo of it in pieces.

However I can describe all the pieces. Between the siphon and the cistern is a rubber washer. Under the cistern on the flush pipe itself is a large nut followed by a hard plastic washer, followed by another rubber washer. The gap in between the whole lot is filled with silicon.

Below is a photo of the underside of the cistern showing the nut.

I'm thinking maybe i should just get another siphon that's the correct size?

Its unusual for a cistern of this type to be 2", maybe someone used a close coupled cistern and used it as a low level?

Fitting an adapter (1 1/2 to 2") will prob risk leaks and a 2" sipon will not connect to the flush pipe

Better still get a new low level cistern with an 11/2" hole already, job done
