Double Layer of plasterboard??????????

i am replacing a ceiling , and on taking down the exsisting ceiling i noticed it was a double layer of plasterboard.

ANY IDEAS WHY THIS IS AND WOULD IT NEED REPLACING IN A SIMILAR FASHION

Could be for fire regs, or for soundproofing qualities...

ceilings are double boarded for fire protection you will probly find there all done on that floor level
