Repairing small leak on felt roof

by Vic112 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 12:50 pm

Hello

We have a flat felt roof above our kitchen and last week after some torrential rain we got a couple of small wet patches on the kitchen ceiling. They have since dried even though we have had more rain.
The roof is felt with a layer of gravel. It looks like it could be a few years old as the gravel is dirty and there is moss growing.

We can't see any damage to the felt or any wet patches so we're not 100% sure where the water is getting in but judging from where the wet patches were we think it may be the seal (where the felt goes into the brick).

We were thinking of removing the gravel and then coating the felt with a waterproof/sealable paint (can anyone advise a decent brand?). And then adding a new layer of gravel as I've read this is to stop the heat from cracking the felt.

Can anyone offer any advice? Is this the best way to go about it without paying a roofer?
Thanks

Vic112,
If you cannot see any defects on the flat bit I would suggest you look carefully at where the felt is cut into the brickwork perhaps even rake out some of the mortar and check that it goes in at least 20mm.
Removing the stones can be a nightmare if they have (and they should have been) stuck down.
Start with the esiest option first.

Black Magic made by Flag is supposed to be very good.
