I am renovating a barn in France and need to install a first floor over a 90 sqm area. I will build a load bearing wall to split the area into 2 (leaving spans of about 5m) and tie in the built floor to the existing stone walls. I am keen to keep the floor thickness to the minimum consistent with carrying the necessary (domestic) load, incorporating water based UFH in the first floor and necessary insulation. The ground floor space will become an independent apartment with the main house above. Options for the floor construction include concrete beam and block or timber. I would be very interested in views on the benefits of both options to include sound, fire and thermal insulation, ease of building and cost. Any guidance on suitable references would also be gratefully received.
