Fixing deck joist to wall

by Kevinbowes » Sat May 25, 2013 6:12 am

Hello all.
I need to fix a decking joist to the external brick walls of a house but I'm not sure how to do it. I have read that you should use expansion bolts, but I have never used these and don't know how they work. What size bolts do I need, what size drill bit should I use, do they attach themselves or do I also need some kind of plug, do I tighten them with sockets, spanners, or what? Please help with as much detail as you can. Thank you.

size 10mm x 120mm long, make sure the hole is free from debris and slightly larger than 10mm,take the nut off and tap into position don't hammer it in, you will never get the nut on and you tighten with a socket wrench or spanner

Thanks for your advice welsh brickie.

Someone at Builder Depot suggested using thunder bolts which just fit directly into the drill hole with no plug or anything - apparently it just holds itself. Has anyone ever used these and is that the case? Thanks for any comments.
