render on old red bricks

Hi M8,
The usual practice is to wet the wall before rendering.
On a cold winter day you need only to splash wall with water from a large brush, but on a hot summer day you really need to wet the wall well.
I have seen plasterers, and I have also myself used a hose to wet the wall on a real hot day.
Even though the weather has been pretty crappy lately it has still been quite warm, try giving the scratch a real good damping and you should be ok.
