Damp On Stairs From Cellar Not Touching External Wall - How To Treat

by Halesowenmum » Fri Nov 01, 2013 1:48 pm

Hi

Looking at moving in a traditional brick terraced house. Cellar has been tanked but the stairs leading up from the cellar to the ground floor are damp as you walk up the stairs. The stairs sit to the middle part of the house ie they're not sitting next to any external wall.

Would this just require damp proofing, or because they are, technically, below ground level, would they actually need tanking??

If the cellar has been tanked and is dry, then the stairs should be okay. I would guess the damp was caused by a leak somewhere. Obviously this is just a guess, without actually visiting the house I can't be sure.
