Split Level Floor for Headroom and Stairwell - Next Stage Project

by burt12345 » Wed Feb 05, 2014 5:02 pm

Hello again.

My next project stage is to modify our basement and the room above it - I'll call that a study for ease, however it will be a room for going in and typing stuff like this!

Eventually I need to raise the height of the basement door to make it a proper front door, but internally as the basement floor to study floor height is 2m I'll have to raise it. The height of the study is 2.4m, so my idea is to pinch a bit of that headroom - so we can fit the stairs in building regs minimum, so I'll need to make it a split level floor.

I'm assuming 150mm x 50mm joists, and the posts to be 100m x 100mm (do these need to site on a foot plate?

I can't find any guidance on this, I'm unsure where I need to double my joists up or if my joists are going the right way!, so I've done a quick sketchup of what I think may be close to being correct - my stairs should be 10 risers so ignore those!

thanks in advance, any input is greatly appreciated.

honestly, its best to call the building inspector to advise you, any conversion will have to be approved before commencement of any alteration, they are quite approachable, and after all they are the ones who will pass it anyway.
