Possible Causes of Concrete Post Decay - Any Ideas?

by Zhinob_Meshmoll » Thu Apr 10, 2014 12:45 pm

Hi Forum, I have a 2 year old fence and some of the concrete support posts are splitting/cracking.

In your experience can anybody give possible reasons? Are the posts just poor quality to start with.

Regards

water ingress and frost would cause it. Probably caused by a hairline crack in the concrete

Thanks for the reply WB.

The fact I can see the line of the steel inserts inside makes me believe there's not enough concrete to surround them. And I think therein lies the weakness.

Could vibrations of the fence panel cause cracks in the concrete? Either the wind rattling them or the kids kicking the ball at it?

I think poorly made posts are the real issue though.

fabrication is the fault then, if the steel is rusty then water has penetrated it,probably best to replace it as it will only get worse
