Staining a Stained Floor - is this going to be ok?

by useless@diy » Sun Jun 01, 2014 4:29 pm

Hi - Any adice on this would be much appreciated. I had my kitchen floor sanded and stained several years ago. The colour I chose is Terraccota which turned out to be too reddish ( seemed like a good idea at the time). I decided to live with it but now that I am retired I thought I would restain it. I can't afford to have it professionally done and don't fancy the palaver of sanding again. Therefore, is it possible to stain over the current stained floor boards with a lighter colour.

Many thanks

George

Hi George

In a word, no. Any new stain can only darken the floor even more. I'd be thinking in terms of covering it with another material. Don't forget that sanding a floor reduces the thickness of the boards, sometimes to quite a large extent, especially in order to remove a penetrated stain.

Hi Proptech

Thanks for the reply. I suspected the answer would be 'no' - I will now have to think again or just live with it.

Thanks again

George
