New Cooker Wiring - Is it ok to Run 2 Cookers on a Single 45 amp MCB? Ask questions and find answers to many subjects relating to electrics and electrical work

Hi All,
I have been asked to supply some power for 2 electric ovens.
1 is a double and the other is a single. The double has a fuse rating of 20 amps and the single is 16 amps making a total of 36 amps. would this be acceptable, to put the 2 on the same circuit using a 45 amp mcb.The circuit will be run in 10mm t&e. I have seen on the net some where a junction splitter for this very reason. The consumer unit has limited spare ways, and dont really want to put in another.

There is nothing in the wiring regulations to stop you supplying a 45A duel cooker connection unit from a 45A MCB. And nothing to stop you supplying two items from this.

Question is will the 10mm T&E be man enough ref method 100 and 102 is OK but 101 and 103 is not so it depends on the run. But likely OK.

Next question is what does the manufacturers data say for the oven supply? Standard supply for an oven is 32A but at 45A then it may be the oven is relying on the MCB/Fuse in consumer unit for protection and 45A could be too high. For portable appliance the cable only needs protecting any protection required for the appliance has to be built into the appliance. But for fixed appliances the manufacturer can stipulate the protection required and the problem is should a fault cause a short line to neutral then the appliance must fail safe. i.e. fuse or MCB will open. But at 45A it could fail to do that if internal wiring was not heavy enough.

So it's a case of reading the instructions.

thanks for your reply. On reflection, I have run 2 seperate supplys, one for each cooker mcb's rated to each cooker.one rated at 16 amp other at 20 amp, as you say 45 amp way to big for either.
